Avionics applications are a harsh environment for today’s electronics, but increasingly, commercial technology is being adapted for these onerous environments.
Comtel now provide VITA and PICMG bus custom backplanes with special adaptations for these critical markets, in low and high volume. Whilst in principle the commercial bus technology can be used directly, there are a number of design, manufacturing, and test procedures that need to be considered to produce a fully compliant product.
Typically, the electronics are housed within an ATR format, or custom format enclosure, usually using conduction cooling rather than air cooling; this requires subtle electronic and mechanical design changes to standard products. There is usually a need to conformally coat the backplanes to limit the potential damage due to avionic fluids, and other liquids, and sometimes it’s critical to expose the backplanes to environmental stress screening (ESS) procedures, or burn-in, prior to shipment to meet the stringent reliability demands.
Comtel are now shipping these high performance custom backplanes to a number of customers, with many successful deployed backplanes within Europe and US.
